Botox & Fillers

T’is the season!

Answering Your Holiday Botox & Filler Questions

It is no secret that we tend to put more effort into our appearance when attending special events and celebrative get-togethers. The holidays are no exception!

At our office, we tend to have more requests for Botox and facial filler procedures leading up to the holidays, because of the common desire to approach this special, transformative time by putting one’s best face forward – literally.

Botox and dermal/facial fillers, either individually or in combination, can help minimize the appearance of wrinkles and also prevent them. They do this either through plumping the skin or relaxing the facial muscles that create them, respectively. This plumping of the skin and reduction in unwanted wrinkles is what our patients seek, which can give them a ‘fresher’, more youthful appearance – in person, and in photos.

To see some examples of the kind of difference Botox and/or fillers can give you, you can visit these links by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons:

Botox and dermal/facial fillers – what’s the difference?

A question we get often is ‘what’s the difference between Botox and fillers?’

Below, you will be able to learn about what both procedures are, and their benefits and risks, so you can be informed even before you step foot into a cosmetic surgeon’s office!

What is Botox? / How Does Botox Work?

Botulinum Toxin Type A (Botox) is an injectable protein that is utilized to minimize the appearances of wrinkles and fine lines on the face, neck and hands.

Botox functions by actively blocking the nerve impulses around the injection site, thereby relaxing and preventing the future contraction of the muscles adjacent to the treatment site.

What is Botox used for?

Botox injections are used to correct a variety of aesthetic issues that contribute to visible signs of aging, including:

  •       Eyebrow furrows (glabellar lines or “11” lines – between the eyebrows)
  •       Crow’s feet (lines and wrinkles surrounding the eye region)
  •       Bunny lines on the sides of the nose
  •       Gummy smiles
  •       Nasal flare
  •       Sagging or fine lines at the corners of the mouth
  •       Drooping eyebrows
  •       Horizontal or vertical neck bands

What are the benefits of Botox?

In addition to helping reduce the appearance of the above static wrinkles (and more) that are created by the muscles the Botox is used to relax, it lessens the intensity of dynamic wrinkles (temporary wrinkles created by movement of the face), resulting in gentler facial expressions, while also preventing static wrinkles.

How Soon Will I See Results? / How Long Does Botox Last?

After the chosen number of injections, spanning 20-30 minutes, Botox can diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by more than 80% within 5 days. The visible, wrinkle-reducing effects of Botox treatment peak 2-7 days following the initial injections, and the results last approximately 3-5 months.

How popular is Botox?

Botox remains one of the most popular cosmetic procedures because it is a safe, non-invasive treatment for patients with the goal of correcting deep, pervasive wrinkles, as well as for younger patients who are also seeking out Botox treatments as a preventative anti-aging measure. A reason for this may be that  in addition to obscuring the appearance of current wrinkles and lines, Botox injections also serve a pre-emptive function, in that they prevent the creation of new wrinkles by constraining the patient from making the facial expressions responsible for the formation of wrinkles.

The rejuvenating effects of Botox injections are amplified when Botox is performed in conjunction with other cosmetic treatments, such as: chemical peels, dermal fillers, and microdermabrasion.

Who should inject Botox?

The importance of having your Botox treatments performed by an experienced plastic surgeon cannot be emphasized enough, because if Botox is injected by anyone without an in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy and a high level of proficiency in the field of aesthetic enhancement procedures, the results can be devastating. An unnatural “frozen” or “tightly pulled” facial appearance, visible ripples, and shiny foreheads, are only a few of the potential complications that can occur after the improper administration of Botox injections. Dr. Hani Sinno is a skillful and well-respected plastic surgeon who has performed countless Botox treatments at his private practice in Montreal, Quebec, and has helped many of his patients to safely minimize the appearance of their wrinkles and fine lines. During your initial consultation, Dr. Sinno will help you explore your options to determine the ideal treatment sites and optimal number of Botox units you will require to achieve beautiful, natural-looking results.

Are the effects of Botox reversible?

Yes, fortunately the effects of Botox are reversible. If you are not satisfied with your result, there is a type of injectable that can be used to counteract the effects. This is why choosing a qualified, skilled, and experienced injector is so important – so you can be assured that the results will be beautifully natural, and meet (or exceed!) your expectations.

Dermal/Facial Fillers

What are dermal/facial fillers?

Fillers get the name from the word ‘fill’, which is what the function of fillers is – to fill in areas of the face and neck that could use more volume, such as sunken areas of the face or wrinkles. Injectable dermal fillers are a convenient and cost-effective treatment option for individuals with the aesthetic goal of restoring a youthful and refreshed facial appearance without having to undergo an invasive surgical procedure such as a facelift.

What is in dermal/facial fillers?

A key component of many of the newest dermal fillers is a substance known as hyaluronic acid (HA), which is an element found naturally in the skin’s connective tissue.

How do dermal/facial fillers work?

Hyaluronic acid, the main active ingredient in fillers, functions by drawing water into the skin, thereby hydrating the skin and restoring the skin’s youthful “plump,” voluminous appearance. With age, the body’s natural hyaluronic acid levels decrease, causing the delicate facial skin to lose volume and highlighting the appearance of wrinkles, folds and fine lines. By replenishing the body’s hyaluronic acid levels, dermal fillers effectively restore lost volume to the contours of the face, smooth and fill in fine lines and facial wrinkles, augment thin lips, and minimize the appearance of scars. Fillers can also be used to shape and contour the face, such as with chin augmentation and nose correction. This option may also be appealing for those who are considering a surgical intervention. In a simple, non-invasive, temporary fashion, the patient can instantaneously visualize the results of a procedure. The advantage of doing this is that there is only a temporary change and it can be tailored to your preferences on the spot.

What Kinds of Dermal Fillers do you Offer?

Dr. Sinno is pleased to offer his patients a number of effective dermal filler options, including, but not limited to:

  •       JUVÉDERM® : a hyaluronic-acid based injectable that is ideally suited for patients seeking to augment their lips, replenish lost facial volume, or fill in facial wrinkles and folds.  JUVÉDERM® is FDA-approved to provide rejuvenating results that last up to one year from the initial treatment.  Because of its smooth texture, JUVÉDERM® is appropriate for patients of all ethnic groups and skin types, even those with thin, sensitive skin. 9 months – 1 year
  •       Restylane® : a filler formulated with a biocompatible, non-animal based form of hyaluronic acid, making it a safe and effective choice for patients with allergies who would like to add volume to their face and lips, and diminish the appearance of moderate to severe facial folds and lines. On average, Restylane® treatments can last from 6-18 months.

How popular are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers have become increasingly popular because the injections are non-invasive, generally take no more than 30 minutes, and do not require any post-treatment downtime, meaning that patients can easily schedule a treatment session during their lunch hour, and return to work immediately thereafter.

Who should inject Facial Fillers?

In order to safely achieve optimal results from your dermal filler treatment, it is highly important that your injections are performed by a competent and experienced plastic surgeon, because if the dermal fillers are improperly injected, there is an increased risk for a number of complications, including: pooling of blood beneath the skin (hematoma), infection, and unnatural or imbalanced aesthetic results. Dr. Hani Sinno, M.D., is a plastic surgeon who enjoys helping his patients rejuvenate their facial appearance with injectable dermal fillers at his private practice in Montreal, Quebec.

Are Facial Fillers Reversible?

Yes, fortunately facial fillers are reversible through the use of another FDA-approved injectable that safety dissolves the fillers.

What Happens During a Botox or Dermal Filler Consultation?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Sinno will assess your facial anatomy and treatment goals in order to help you select the appropriate dermal filler (or combination of fillers) to ensure that your aesthetic objectives are fulfilled, and you are able to achieve beautiful, natural-looking results from your dermal filler treatment.

How Soon/Long Will I See Results?

The visible results of your dermal filler treatment will be apparent immediately after your treatment, and should last between five months to one year (depending on the specific filler you had injected). Periodic maintenance treatments are recommended in order to preserve your initial dermal filler results.
