Liposuction and Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) – What’s the Difference?

The similarity between these two procedures is that they result in the removal of fat cells or pockets, and therefore aid in contouring the body in a way that smooths out fat deposits. However, the level of invasiveness differs. Liposuction involves the insertion of a vacuum tube through a small incision in the skin (about 1/8th of an inch or approximately 3-4mm) into the fat pocket, through which the fat is suctioned out. Liposuction does not address the issue of sagging or excess skin. No, a tummy tuck does not address the fat deposits on the sides of the waist. It is common to add liposuction to other procedures in order to make the results more even, but some patients are also satisfied with the results gained from just a tummy tuck procedure, or just a liposuction procedure. Do Fat Cells Come Back After Surgery? Is Liposuction Permanent?

No, fat cells do not generally grow back after being permanently removed surgically. Although technically speaking there will be no new fat cells replacing the ones that were taken out, this does not make you immune to weight gain that can result from negative lifestyle habits and a net increase in calories (meaning the consumption of more calories than you burn). Since you have less fat cells in the area of the surgery, you may notice a decreased tendency to gain weight in that area. However, you may notice that other areas of your body may continue to gain weight if you do not maintain a healthy caloric balance. In addition, fat cells have the potential to expand, and since not all fat cells are removed in the procedure, the ones that are left will still be able to store more fat without the maintenance of the healthy habits explained in the beginning of this blog. Nonetheless, the surgical removal of fat cells is permanent and, if combined with improved lifestyle habits before and after surgery, you should not gain weight back.
